Residents have varying degrees
of interest in obstetrics as a part of their future practices as Family
Physicians. To better utilize the resources for obstetrics training
available to the residents, our Curriculum Committee has developed a system to
allow residents with a high interest in obstetrics to follow and deliver more
obstetrics patients (high obstetrics track) while providing residents with a low
interest in obstetrics sufficient obstetrics patients to meet requirements for
training (low obstetrics track ).

We have
recently begun teaching the ALSO (Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics) on
site as part of our curriculum and will be training each new class for
certification during their first year. This course greatly assists the
physician in his or her confidence in dealing with obstetric emergencies.
Residents desiring the low track obstetrics option may
choose to do a total of 2 months obstetrics in the first year and 1 month in the
second year as the schedule allows. The additional month in the second
year is divided between 2 weeks of gynecology and 2 weeks elective time.
Residents desiring the high track obstetrics option may
choose to do a total of 2 months obstetrics in the first year and 3 months in
the second year as the schedule allows. The additional month of obstetrics
training can include additional training in surgical obstetrics.
Residents can also choose the standard option of 2 months
of obstetrics in the first year and 2 months in the second year.
All residents are expected to personally deliver
their assigned obstetrics patients whenever possible.
Recently we have added to our OB faculty
and have also added 3D ultrasound capability to our in-house radiology
department to increase our ability to provide state-of-the-art service to our
patients.
