MS 4 FAMILY MEDICINE ELECTIVE

DESCRIPTION:

A Family Medicine elective experience for fourth year medical students is available at the Waco Family Medicine Residency Program. The residency is affiliated with the University of Texas Southwestern Health Science Center at Dallas and offers an excellent combination of academics and clinical experience. Students should have completed their third year clinical clerkships as a prerequisite to take the elective. The experience is participatory with the student delivering primary care to ambulatory adults and children under the supervision of full time Family Medicine faculty.

GOAL:

To develop an understanding of and the ability to implement the biopsychosocial model of healthcare with emphasis on the ambulatory care medical setting. Many students have found this rotation helpful in selecting a residency as well.

OBJECTIVES:

Develop skills in information gathering including:
  • Good reading habits
  • Computerized literature searches
  • Appropriate use of reference materials including books, journals, computerized medical information
  • Improve ability to explain the evaluation and management of commonly encountered outpatient problems.
  • Develop sensitivity to the psychosocial aspects of illness.
  • Demonstrate effective communication with patients.

ACTIVITIES:

  • Student selected reading list
  • Ambulatory Clinic patient care
  • Discussions with faculty
  • Resident clinics
  • Faculty feedback mid-rotation and at end of rotation

OPTIONAL ACTIVITIES:

  • Computer assisted literature searches
  • Computer assisted diagnosis

CONFERENCES:

  • Daily noon conferences either in the FHC conference room or hospitals
  • Tuesday afternoon lectures from 2:00 to 4:00 in FPC conference room

EVALUATION:

The student will be given verbal feedback on your performance during the rotation. Near the end of the rotation faculty will meet formally with the student to discuss his/her experience. Any evaluations requested by the student's school will be promptly completed and returned.

To apply for an MS4 rotation the following must be submitted at least 8 weeks prior to the desired start date.

  • Completed application
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • Copy of medical school transcript
